How does a resident submit a building inspection request through the portal?

The town needs to have both the portal and inspection requests enabled — inspection requests specifically need to be turned on, even if the general Online Permits section doesn’t.

Depending on the town’s settings, the resident may or may not need to log in / create an account first — some towns don’t require it.

Ways a Resident Might Reach the Inspection Request Form

Depending on how the town has configured things, they may get there via:

  1. A direct inspection-request URL the town has posted on its website.

  2. A QR code provided in municipal marketing materials.

  3. The home page of the town’s portal (if enabled there).

  4. The “Requests” page of the town’s portal (if enabled there).

  5. Their permit record in the portal, if it’s in a status ready for inspections — via a “Schedule Inspection” button.

  6. The Online Permits section of the header (if enabled), scrolling down to the inspections section.

Finding the permit: search by permit control number, permit number, or location address.

Filling Out the Request

  • If the resident arrived via a link (not from their permit record), they’ll need to search for their permit — if they came from the permit record directly, that field is pre-filled.
  • Any inspections already on file for the permit display at the top (date, subcode, type, status). If none exist yet, this section simply doesn’t show.
  • Select inspection subcode — the dropdown lists all subcodes on the permit; only those that haven’t yet had a final passing inspection are selectable.
  • Select inspection type — these types are defined by the municipality.
  • Contact info auto-populates if the resident is logged in; otherwise they’ll need to fill it in manually.
  • Select preferred dates — a calendar appears. Residents must select 1–3 dates; the municipality controls how many are required, but three slots are always shown regardless.
  • The selectable date range depends on the municipality’s preferences.
  • Days with no inspectors available are grayed out.
  • Hovering over an available day shows an estimate of remaining inspection slots for that day (this doesn’t account for pending, unconfirmed requests).
  • Availability is color-coded: green/yellow/orange as slots fill up, red once the day is fully booked (unselectable).
  • There is no way to request a specific time of day. The municipality either provides a time when confirming the date, gives a general window, or includes that detail in the request’s description/instructions.

After Submitting

The resident receives a confirmation email with their submitted details — the inspection is not scheduled yet at this point. The municipality reviews the request, confirms a date, and sends a follow-up email with the confirmed inspection date and any additional details.

Payment is not part of this process at all.
