How do I set up inspection scheduling through the portal?

Citizens with open construction permits can request inspections through the Online Permits section of sdlportal.com.

Step 1: Enable Public Access Under Web Requests > Building Inspection, make sure Allow Account Access is turned on — without this, citizens can't request inspections through the portal at all. From this same area, towns can also configure:

  • Description and Instructions shown to citizens
  • Subcode Inspection Type Exclusions (see Step 2)
  • Calendar settings — how far ahead citizens can schedule, and how many requested dates are required (towns can require 1–3 preferred dates)

Step 2: Set Up Inspection Types (SDL Desktop) Configured under Tools > Construction Options, General tab, broken out by subcode. Everything set up here syncs automatically to the portal. Exclude any inspection types that shouldn't be schedulable via Subcode Inspection Type Exclusions in the same area.

Step 3: Configure Calendar Settings Per Subcode (SDL Online) Go to SDL Online > Construction module > Calendar Settings, choose the specific subcode, and configure it — same Recurring/Overrides tabs used for general inspector scheduling, but done per subcode.

Important: the inspection count here is per subcode, not per inspector. A count of 8 means 8 total inspections for that subcode across all assigned inspectors combined — not 8 each. Adjust the count to reflect combined capacity if multiple inspectors share a subcode.

Request Sync and Scheduling

  • If payment is required for the inspection request, it must be completed before the request syncs to Desktop.
  • The request syncs via PortalSync and appears on the Desktop homepage under "Portal Request." Staff schedule it manually from there — it is not auto-scheduled.
