How do I set up a new inspector account for mobile access?

The process is the same for hosted and on-premise towns — an Active Directory account is not required for mobile access.

What’s Needed

All an inspector needs is an SDL Desktop account with a unique email address in the email field.

  • A shared department email (e.g., electrical@town.gov) works for desktop-only users, but mobile access requires a unique email per person.
  • Since some inspectors only need mobile access, it’s common to leave the “Need GeoClient login” checkbox unchecked on their account.

Add the Inspector Profile

After the SDL Desktop account exists, add an inspector profile: 1. Go to Tools > Options > Workflow II > Manage Inspectors. 2. Add the inspector and check off the modules they need.

Logging In

The inspector uses their SDL Desktop credentials to log into the mobile app.

For SDL Connect (non-NJ) Towns

  1. Go to Admin Settings > User Management > Users in SDL Connect.
  2. Click New. Enter first name, last name, email, unique username, and password.
  3. Click Save, then reopen the user and click Edit.
  4. Assign the user’s primary department.
  5. Under the Departments tab, add relevant departments.
  6. Under the Roles tab, assign appropriate roles (at minimum, Standard User — Admin alone isn’t sufficient).
  7. Click Save.

The inspector logs into SDL Field with these Connect credentials. There’s no additional per-user licensing cost for inspectors, outside contractors, or third-party contributors added to SDL Field.
