Why can't I open a violation from within a permit in SDL Connect?

Violations in SDL Connect can't be created as standalone records — they have to come from either an inspection record or a permit record.

To add a violation from within a permit: go to the permit's Violations tab and click Add.

If the Add button appears but does nothing: this is a known issue — violations are only fully supported on permit forms. If the form wasn't configured as a permit (the permit checkbox isn't checked in Form Settings > Permits tab), the button shows up but doesn't work.

Steps to check:

  1. Confirm the form is configured as a permit (Permits tab enabled in Form Settings).
  2. Confirm the user has the Permitting role — required to access permit settings.
  3. Confirm violation settings are configured under Form Settings > Violations tab (infraction types, authorized officers, etc.).

If you need a violation that isn't tied to any permit, the workaround is to create a spot inspection first, then add the violation from that inspection.
